Understanding Monthly and Quarterly GST Returns: GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, CMP-08, and Annual GSTR-9 Filings

KOKJAGUAR Advisory October 11, 2026 4 Min Read

The Statutory Framework of GST Return Filings in India

Holding a GSTIN requires continuous compliance. Every registered regular taxpayer in Maharashtra must file periodic returns detailing outward supplies (sales), inward supplies (purchases), and eligible tax credits. Missing these deadlines leads to automated late fees, interest charges, and potential GSTIN suspension.

For initial registration, see our complete GST guide or engage our ongoing monthly GST return retainers.

Core GST Returns Explained:

1. GSTR-1: Return for Outward Supplies

Details all B2B invoices, B2C sales, debit/credit notes, and export supplies generated during the tax period. Due on the 11th of the following month for monthly filers (or the 13th for quarterly QRMP filers).

2. GSTR-3B: Monthly Summary & Tax Payment Return

A self-declared summary return reporting total sales, eligible Input Tax Credit (ITC) claimed from GSTR-2B, reverse charge liabilities, and actual tax payment via cash and credit ledger. Due on the 20th of the following month for monthly filers.

3. CMP-08: Quarterly Return for Composition Dealers

A simplified statement-cum-challan for composition taxpayers to declare turnover and pay flat tax. Due on the 18th of the month following each quarter. (Compare options in our Regular vs Composition Scheme guide).

4. GSTR-9 & GSTR-9C: Annual Return & Reconciliation Statement

A comprehensive annual return consolidating all monthly filings for the financial year. Due by December 31st following the close of the financial year. Mandatory for taxpayers with aggregate turnover exceeding ₹2 Crores.

To avoid penalties, review our guides on Input Tax Credit reconciliation and GST late fee calculation rules.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Filing a Nil GSTR-3B and Nil GSTR-1 is legally mandatory even if turnover is zero. Failing to file Nil returns incurs an automated daily late fee of ₹20 per day (₹10 CGST + ₹10 SGST) on each return.
